Looking for an energy-efficient window replacement? Double- and triple-glazed windows are great choices to help you save on energy bills and take advantage of other benefits. But how will you decide which one is best for your home? Considering these factors will help you determine whether to install double-pane windows or to go a step further with triple-pane windows:
- Consider the window’s R-Value, which is a measurement of how well a window blocks heat transfer. Triple-pane windows are known to have higher R-values, helping you save on energy costs.
- Look at the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of the glass, or the ability of the glass to absorb heat. Lower SHGC is great for southern climates to help keep cooling bills lower during the summer months, while higher SHGC is beneficial for northern climates to help keep homes warmer. Generally, triple-pane windows have a lower SHGC compared to double-pane windows.
- Compare costs. Triple-pane windows are usually more expensive than double-pane windows.
- Think about the window’s sound-blocking properties. Triple-pane windows have very little advantage over double-pane windows when it comes to blocking out noise.
