If you live in an older home with original windows, you may be dealing with a certain frustration that plagues homeowners like you… stuck windows! When wood window frames, trim, sills and sashes are painted, some of the paint can get into the track or along the bottom of the window and– when the paint dries– it’s difficult to open and close the window properly. This is particularly annoying in a room that’s been closed up for awhile.

Here’s an overview of each step…
1. Get a putty knife and a box cutter or simply a window zipper. Then inspect the window to make sure it’s dried paint that’s causing your window to stick.
2. Free the interior of the window by drawing a line between the sash and your window stop using your cutter and pushing it with your putty knife. You can also cut the line at once if you have a window zipper.
3. Free the exterior in the same way.
4. Try opening the window. If it’s still difficult to move up and down, go back to clearing away paint or double check to make sure the window is not warped or malfunctioning for another reason.
