Contributing editor of Better Homes and Gardens, Danny Lipford, offers the following instructions that can help you turn your old wood door into an attractive conversation piece:
Step 1: Remove the pins of the hinges. (Tip: Remove the top pin last.)
Step 2: Remove the hinges from the door.
Step 3: Set the door up on sawhorses to protect the surface during the sanding and finish.
Step 4: Remove the hardware. (Tip: Carefully make note of how they are attached. Take pictures if necessary.)
Step 5: Remove the existing finish.
Step 6: Stain and finish the door. (Tip: Use sprayer for best outcome.)
Step 7: Install a kick plate to dress up the door.
Step 8: Install a door knocker.
Step 9: Re-hang the door once the stain has dried.
Step 10: Enjoy the gorgeous results!
