Pros and Cons of Argon-Filled Windows

Pros and Cons of Argon-Filled Windows

argon-filled windowsArgon gas windows are double- or triple-paned glass windows that are filled with argon in between the panes. Argon is a non-toxic, odorless, and inexpensive gas that makes windows more energy efficient.

If you are thinking of installing argon gas windows, here are some pros and cons to help you make an informed decision:

Pros:

  • Argon gas windows are energy-efficient. They increase the R-values of windows and minimize heat exchange;
  • They increase the sound-proofing qualities of windows;
  • Argon-filled windows minimize condensation and frost in windows;
  • They are suitable for different climates;
  • They help block UV rays;
  • The cost of installing argon gas windows is recovered in a short time;
  • They come in different sizes and can be installed in different window styles; and
  • The argon gas does not corrode the window material.

Cons:

  • The argon gas eventually dissipates from the window;
  • If windows are not properly sealed or if there is gap, the gas will leak out without you noticing it;
  • Argon may leak in windows with metal spacers. Consider non-metallic spacers to reduce leakage and failure possibilities.
