French doors can add more light and life to your home, offering a classic touch to your interior design. But French doors can also pose a security risk because they are an appealing entry point for anyone wanting to break in. You can prove intruders wrong by considering the following ways to make your French doors more secure.
- Adding double cylinder break locks, since it is sometimes impossible to install locks and handles that are at least 36 inches from any glass opening on French doors.
- Making sure that your doors swing into your home and not out. Those that swing out have exposed hinges, which burglars can easily remove in order to break in.
- Adding at least one-inch long barrel or slide bolts both at the top and the bottom of the inactive door panel.
- Changing the locks when you move in to a home with existing French doors or when you lose your door keys.
